Job Description
We are seeking an Operations Director to oversee and manage all aspects of technical asset management for esVolta’s growing fleet of operational front-of-meter utility-scale battery energy storage projects. The Operations Director will report to the Company’s VP of Asset Management, and will collaborate closely with the Company’s construction, engineering, and commercial operations teams to ensure high level of operational performance and uptime through the operations and maintenance of the physical assets working in close coordination with BESS, EMS, O&M, ROC and other service providers.

Key Responsibilities
The Operations Director will lead the development, execution, and continuous improvement of esVolta’s energy storage project operations strategy, with a particular focus on building scalable, in-house operations and maintenance (O&M) capabilities for grid-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS). This leadership role blends strategic vision with tactical execution, overseeing day-to-day asset performance while also driving the long-term buildout of internal teams, systems, and standards across a rapidly expanding portfolio.
  • Strategically build and lead an in-house O&M organization, including staffing, training, process development, and transition planning from third-party to self-perform operations.
  • Design and implement O&M playbooks, SOPs, and KPIs specifically tailored to utility-scale BESS technologies, aligned with NERC, OEM, and ISO/RTO requirements.
  • Lead performance monitoring, outage management, and RCA processes for fleet-wide performance optimization, integrating real-time data and predictive analytics tools.
  • Establish a centralized remote operations center (ROC) strategy and oversee day-to-day operations, fleetwide dispatch support, alarms management, and asset troubleshooting.
  • Drive long-term asset management strategy, including spare parts optimization, degradation mitigation, lifecycle planning, and warranty/contract alignment.
  • Collaborate early with Engineering and Execution teams during project design and EPC selection to embed operability, maintainability, and cost-efficiency into project delivery.
  • Serve as the internal voice of operations for daily dispatch planning, key contract negotiations (PPAs/Tolls) and project planning phase (incorporating lessons learnt).
  • Own operational risk management and HSE alignment, establishing controls and emergency response protocols, and coordinating closely with the HSE Director.
  • Build long-term partnerships with key service partners and local AHJs.
  • Develop and manage O&M budgets, track costs and implement continuous cost-control measures while maintaining high service levels.
  • Build and mentor regional field service teams to reduce reliance on third-party service providers and improve responsiveness and control across priority markets.
  • Implement centralized platforms (e.g., CMMS, SCADA, analytics dashboards) for fleet performance management, work order tracking, compliance reporting, and knowledge sharing.

Skills and Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in engineering, energy systems or related field.
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in O&M, asset management, or plant operations, with at least 3+ years in utility-scale battery energy storage (BESS).
  • Demonstrated success in building and leading internal operations teams, ideally transitioning from third-party models.
  • Strong understanding of battery systems, EMS/SCADA platforms, OEM interfaces, and grid integration challenges.
  • Proven ability to manage operational budgets, contractor relationships, and field team logistics across multiple states or ISOs.
  • Familiarity with NERC compliance, ISO/RTO dispatch operations, and performance data analytics.
  • Experience collaborating cross-functionally with Development, Engineering, and Commercial teams.
  • Exceptional communication skills; capable of representing operations strategy with senior leadership and board-level stakeholders.
  • Highly organized, data-driven, and solutions-oriented; thrives in high-growth, fast-paced environments.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 and cloud collaboration tools (Teams, SharePoint).
  • Willingness to travel as needed to support field operations and project launches.
